A WELCOME INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the World Scout Movement started in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell and in particular to the Bristol South District. Today there are well over 30 million members in 210 countries worldwide, with over 500,000 in the United Kingdom and more than 1100 in our District. Bristol South’s Inaugural General Meeting was held on 1st September 2005. This new District is essentially, an amalgamation of the former Bristol South East + Bristol South West Districts and now includes all areas from Bishopsworth in the west to Stockwood in the east and Bedminster in the north.

We are one of 9 Districts in Avon Scout County. The others are Axe, Bath Brunel Cabot Cotswold Edge,  Gordano, Kingswood, &  Wansdyke.

Bristol South District comprises 21 groups (refer to Groups in Bristol South). Most Groups offer the complete range of Scouting activities for boys and girls from 6 to 18 years of age. Beaver Scout Colonies for 6 – 8 years, Cub Scout Packs for 8 - 10½ years and Scout Troops for 10½ - 14 years. There are District based Explorer Scout Units for 14 - 18 years, including Young Leaders. Progression from one section to another is generally automatic. There is provision for 18 – 25 years in the County based Network Section. Older members tend to be Leaders and/or administrators. Note. all adults are subject to CRB (Criminal Registration Bureau) checks.

The Scout Association is a youth organisation with all Scout Groups and Districts in this country being separate educational charities (Our District registered charity number is 1091301)

The Aim of the Scout Association is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. The Method of achieving the Aim of the Association is by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by adult Leadership.

All our Leaders give their time voluntarily and should you wish to help in any way at that level, either as a Leader, assistant, skills instructor, helper or administrator then please contact the DMT (District Management Team)           bristolsouthdmt@avonscouts.org.uk. Scouting is well known for its great enthusiasm and love of adventure and that includes the leaders. Working with young people brings many rewards, including plenty of challenges and the increased friendship of adults from all walks of life with similar interests to your own. Whatever amount of time you can give to being a Leader or helper, your assistance will be very welcome. If you have a special interest or skill that you think may benefit our young members then please offer that knowledge.
