Exmoor day hike - Sunday 1st February 2009
Yes Sophie, 8:30 on a Sunday morning does exist! It was an early start but worth it as we arrived in Exmoor and were walking by 11:00.
We started in Horner, just outside of Porlock and headed south towards Stoke Pero where we found a "guard sheep" on duty!
From there is was on towards the main ridge which runs east to west, stopping for lunch at a stream. We easily climbed to the Macmillan Way and walked to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point at 519m.
It was a bit chilly on the top (probably about -5) but spirits were high and we walked off the hills into a hamlet called Brockwell. The promise of a cake shop kept everyone going - however, Bruce might have been lying about its existence.
We were soon back to the minibus and on our way home. This gave everyone the chance to hear another 2 hours of music from Wattsy's iPod - mixed by DJ Whitehurst - what a treat!
