Appointments and Volunteer Welcome

As part of the Scout National Transition Programme 2023-25 there will be changes to how we do some things, the Volunteers Appointment Process is one of these. Into 2024 you will see changes to the progresses etc mentioned below, not all will be immediate so you may find a blend of old and new in existence as you start your volunteering journey . If at any time you are unsure of anything please do ask, we are learning as well.

Firstly a big welcome and Thank You! We have created this page to inform you about the ‘Volunteer Welcome‘ process and to assure you it is nothing like a formal job interview, more of a conversation.

Thank you for coming forward to volunteer within Scouting in our District, Bristol South and your Scout Group, helping to prepare young people with ‘Skills for life’. As you may be aware as part of welcoming new volunteers or those changing their role you will need to attend the Appointments Committee (Don’t worry it is not scary or an interview and the whole process is being streamlined over 2024).

The “Welcome Meeting” is usually made up of two possibly three members (some have been in Scouting  for a while some haven’t plus somebody you probably know from the group to which you are volunteering), they will have a short informal chat with you about why you are joining Scouting and discuss with you the support you will get and what you may feel you need to be happy and effective in your role, perhaps how to bring your interests to Scouting. Their main purpose is to help ensure you have the right role for you. There is nothing to be worried about.

Once you have had this conversation one of the members of the District Team may be there to have a chat with you about the District and how we can support you with training especially the ‘Let’s Get Started’ modules and answer any questions you may have. The whole process ideally taking no longer than an hour.

If you have any special requirements for the meeting you will be asked to let us know prior to it. We look forward to meeting all those coming forward to volunteer and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to make contact via the channels indicated on your invitation e-mail.

We look forward to meeting and talking with you, thank you again for your involvement.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
