Traditional Rafting – Explorer/Leader Training
TRADITIONAL RAFTING TRAINING DAY
SUNDAY 7th APRIL
If you have an outdoor active Scout or Explorer troop/unit then building and manoeuvring your own homebuilt raft is a must on your summer programme. In order to fulfil this challenge on B1 waters POR requires your leaders to hold an appropriate Activity Permit.
The training day for Leaders and Explorers will be held on Sunday 7th April from 10am until 3.00pm and include sessions on safety, Risk assessments, Raft Building, Check lists, Safety cover and with a practical session on the water in the afternoon. Cost will be £10 to cover building hire, kit hire, tea and biscuits. Payment on the day please. Bring a complete change of clothing and a packed lunch. Toilets and changing facilities will be available.
After training we will ask attendees to run a rafting session possibly with their own troop/unit which an Assessor will oversee and attend to ensure it is run according to the guidelines set out then issue the permit.
Unlike Sailing, Pulling or canoeing there is no National body for this activity so 12 years ago we developed a training programme and check list to comply with the requirements of POR. We have a team of County Assessors who are all keen water sports enthusiasts and know the benefits of running water activities for scouts.
