WELCOME INTRODUCTION Welcome to the World Scout Movement started in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell and in particular to the 107th Bristol (Whitchurch) Scout Group. Today there are well over 25 million members in 210 countries with over 500,000 in the United Kingdom and around 80 in our Group. The Scout Association is a youth organisation with all Scout Groups in this country being separate educational charities (Our registered charity number is 302154) We offer the complete range of Scouting activities for boys and girls from 6 years of age. A Beaver Scout Colony for 6 – 8 years, a Cub Scout Pack for 8 - 10½ years, a Scout Troop for 10½ - 14 years and a District based Explorer Scout Unit for 14 - 18 years. Progression from one section to another is automatic. We are an open Group i.e. not sponsored by any Church nor related to any other organisation and have a policy of unrestricted recruitment. We own our HQ building in Maggs Lane (self-built in 1961) and the surrounding land. Scouting has operated locally since 1946. All our Leaders give their time voluntarily and should you wish to help in any way at that level, either as a Leader, assistant, skills instructor or helper then please speak to any existing Leader. Scouting is well known for its great enthusiasm and love of adventure and that includes the leaders. Working with young people brings many rewards, including plenty of challenges and the increased friendship of adults from all walks of life with similar interests to your own. Whatever amount of time you can give to being a Leader or helper, your assistance will be very welcome. If you have a special interest or skill that you think may benefit our young members then please offer that knowledge. The Group Executive Committee ensures that the Group’s funds, its property, the equipment and its separate training sections (Colony, Pack, Troop and Unit) are properly managed. It is responsible for raising funds and assisting in the recruitment of Leaders and other adult support. Again please speak to any Leader if you require more information regarding helping out on this Committee. The parents of all our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are automatically members of our Group Council who meet at least once a year when they hold their Annual General Meeting. Membership of the Group Executive Committee is confirmed at that meeting. Parental support is very important to the well being of any youth group and can be given in many ways. It is expected that all parents/guardians support the Group to the best of their ability. Notification of all forth coming events are usually conveyed by notes distributed via the child’s section Leader and recorded in the Group’s occasional newsletter ‘The Magpie’. All young members are expected to attend Church Parades (held 4 times a year) and St George’s Day parade (Patron Saint of Scouting). There should be the opportunity to attend at least one camp per year. |
